PAT is Portable appliance testing and involves the testing and inspecting of portable electrical appliances to establish their safety. Portable appliances can be anything from microwaves, toasters, fridges, heaters, extension leads, fans, and power tools to less portable items such as computers and monitors.
Complying with the Law
Under The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, it is the duty of every employer to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees.
PAT Testing applies under the Electrical work regulations 1989 which places duties on employers to ensure that all electrical systems are safe and do not pose dangers to employees or visitors.
The Regulations recommend that maintenance, including test results, should be kept throughout the working life of the electrical equipment including those connected by a plug and socket outlet.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Code of Practice governs these inspection procedures, requiring in Regulation 4(2), that: ‘as may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger.’
As well as the damage caused by defective equipment, including fire and danger to health and life, failure to maintain these items can result in regulatory penalties and legal action.
